Comice PearsRaised at the Comice Horticole, Angers, France. First fruited in 1849 and introduced into Britain by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland 1858. One of the finest pears, it is grown commercially throughout the world and in a small scale in Britain. Pale yellow & juicy. Howgate Wonder applesIsle of Wight, 1915-16. A Blenheim Orange and Newton Wonder cross. A very large apple that can be quite sweet and pleasant when eaten fresh but basically a cooking apple.
Apple & pear season is in full swing and we have many different varieties in the shop this week. New in this week:Falstaff Fashionable bright colour and juicy, crunchy texture - a well rounded apple! Jupiter One of the best cox-style varieties. Slightly more robust and sharper in flavour than Cox. Rubinette A handsome rich flavoured apple which is rarely grown due to horticultural difficulties so it is hard to find on the commercial market. A popular apple amongst our farm shop customers! A crisp eater with a rich honeyed flavour. SpartanOriginating from Canada, 1926. The first apple to arise out of the new scientific breeding programme. A good eater with characteristic McIntosh apple ‘vinous’ flavour. Blenheim OrangeDiscovered in Oxon, England, 1740. Became widely grown in England throughout the 19th Century but is a rare variety today. An eater and cooker. Cooks to a stiff puree. Red PippinKent, England, 1972. A Cox Orange Pippin and Ida Red Cross. The flavour is fundamentally sweet but with much of the rich complexity of Cox.
Egremont RussetUnique nutty flavour and russeted appearance. A versatile apple; working well in savoury salads and a popular partner with cheese. Royal GalaKidds Orange Red & Golden Delicious cross. Sweet, juicy, crunchy. Pitmaston PineappleHeritage variety raised in 1745 by Mr White, steward to Lord Foley of Stoke Edith, Hertfordshire. Distinct pineapple flavour. Rich, nutty & honeyed. Naturally very small fruit size.
